‘Social’ media is making people anti-social

disconnected

For a society that is completely consumed in social media, people are more disconnected than ever. The streets are filled with people bent over, absorbed in the conversations they are having through their phones. But how has scrolling through news feeds become more important than the real things passing us by? This image aims to shine a light on the anti-social behaviour that people’s addiction to social media has caused.

This is most evident in the words in the bottom left-hand corner, which says, ‘[Dis]Connected’. This highlights the irony in being connected online, yet so cut off from the real world. The colour red is often associated with a warning or call to action (ie. stop signs), and is effective in bringing attention to the word ‘Dis’. The image is of two females, both on their phones and by themselves, which furthers the idea of anti-social behaviour. Furthermore, the edges of the photo have been blurred to draw the eye to the phone in the centre, which contextualises the message.
